BEST DAY TRIPS FROM ULUWATU, BALI
Love Uluwatu, but want to see more of Bali?
These are the day trips worth considering between surf sessions and slow beach days.
DON’T SPEND YOUR WHOLE BALI TRIP IN TRAFFIC
Bali looks small on a map, but road travel can take longer than expected. From Uluwatu, the best day trip is not necessarily the place with the most Instagram posts — it’s somewhere you can genuinely enjoy without spending most of the day in a car.
Travel times vary significantly with traffic, weather and your exact starting point, so check the route on the day rather than planning around a fixed driving-time promise.
1. JIMBARAN
Best for: an easy change of scene without committing to a huge travel day.
Walk the bay, spend time by the water and stay into the evening. Jimbaran works particularly well when you want to leave Uluwatu for a few hours rather than turn the day into an expedition.
2. SANUR
Best for: a calmer coastal change from the Bukit.
Sanur has a different rhythm from Uluwatu, with a long seafront area that makes it easy to walk, stop for food and spend a slower day. It can also be relevant if your wider Bali plans involve boats departing from the Sanur area.
3. UBUD — IF YOU’RE HAPPY WITH A LONGER DAY
Best for: travellers who want a very different side of Bali.
Ubud brings temples, art, food and inland landscapes into the trip. From Uluwatu, however, it is a more ambitious day out and traffic can make the journey substantial.
If Ubud is high on your list, consider whether an overnight stay fits your overall Bali itinerary better than rushing there and back.
4. NUSA PENIDA — POSSIBLE, BUT PLAN IT PROPERLY
Best for: travellers who specifically want the island’s dramatic scenery.
A Nusa Penida day trip usually means coordinating road transport, a boat crossing and transport on the island. It can be done, but it is not the relaxed option on this list.
Check current boat schedules, weather, sea conditions and transfer arrangements before committing. If you want a slower experience, staying overnight may make more sense.
5. OR DON’T TAKE A DAY TRIP AT ALL
One of the easiest mistakes on a Bali trip is trying to see the entire island in a week.
If you came to Uluwatu to learn to surf, leave room for your body to rest. Have breakfast slowly. Go to yoga. Explore another Bukit beach. Watch sunset. Let one day have no checklist.
If tomorrow’s surf session matters to you, the “best” day trip might be the one that gets you home rested.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR DAY TRIP
Want easy? Stay closer to the Bukit or choose Jimbaran.
Want a different coastal atmosphere? Consider Sanur.
Want culture and inland Bali? Ubud can be worth the longer journey.
Want dramatic island scenery? Research Nusa Penida logistics carefully.
Want to improve your surfing? You may enjoy keeping your free day local and recovering.
DAY TRIPS FROM ULUWATU: QUICK FAQ
Can you visit Ubud from Uluwatu in one day?
It is possible, but road conditions and traffic can make it a long day. Check current travel times and decide whether the return journey fits the experience you want.
Can you do Nusa Penida as a day trip from Uluwatu?
Yes, with careful coordination of transfers and boat schedules. It is a fuller travel day than staying on Bali’s mainland.
Should I rent a scooter for a Bali day trip?
Do not learn to ride a scooter simply because you are on holiday. If you ride, make sure you are appropriately licensed, insured and experienced, wear a helmet and follow local rules. Otherwise arrange a driver or other transport.
How many day trips should I plan during a surf camp?
There is no ideal number. If surfing is your priority, keep enough flexibility for surf sessions, recovery and changing conditions.
