BEST BEGINNER SURF SPOTS IN ULUWATU, BALI

Where should you surf when you’re just starting out?
A practical guide to choosing waves around Uluwatu — without chasing spots that are too advanced for your level.

FIRST: THERE IS NO “BEST” BEACH EVERY DAY

The best beginner surf spot is the one with the right conditions for you today.

Swell size, tide, wind and crowds can completely change a wave. A beach that feels approachable one morning may be unsuitable for a beginner the next day. That’s why good local coaching matters more than simply memorising a list of famous surf spots.

1. BABY PADANG PADANG

Baby Padang Padang can offer approachable waves for learning when the conditions are suitable. It is important not to confuse it with the famous Padang Padang barrel across the channel, which is associated with much more advanced surfing.

Why beginners may like it: on the right day, it can provide a setting to practise the basics, catch waves and build confidence with a coach.

2. THOMAS BEACH

Thomas Beach can provide useful learning conditions on suitable days. As everywhere around the Bukit, the experience depends heavily on the swell and tide.

For a beginner, the advantage is not the name of the beach — it is arriving when the wave matches your ability and having someone explain where to sit, which waves to choose and how to navigate the session.

3. BALANGAN & DREAMLAND — AS YOU PROGRESS

Balangan and Dreamland can become options for progressing surfers when conditions align. They should not be treated as universally beginner-friendly spots.

As your paddling, positioning and wave selection improve, experiencing different breaks can help you become a more adaptable surfer — but progression should happen step by step.

BEGINNER RULE

A famous surf spot is never worth skipping a stage of your progression.

WHAT ABOUT THE FAMOUS ULUWATU REEF?

The iconic Uluwatu reef is one of the reasons surfers travel to Bali, but it is not where we would send a complete beginner for a first lesson.

Staying in Uluwatu doesn’t mean you have to surf Uluwatu itself. Think of it as your base: your coach can choose from the wider area according to the day’s conditions and your progression.

HOW WE CHOOSE YOUR SURF SPOT

Before a session, we consider your surf level, swell size and direction, tide, wind and the group. The aim is to maximise useful learning time rather than simply take everyone to the same beach.

Complete beginners need different conditions from surfers already catching unbroken waves. Keeping coaching personal and adapting the session is a big part of helping everyone progress.

BEGINNER SURF SPOTS: QUICK FAQ

Which Uluwatu surf spot is best for a complete beginner?

There isn’t one answer for every day. Baby Padang Padang or Thomas Beach may offer useful learning conditions, but the best choice depends on the forecast and your level.

Is Padang Padang beginner-friendly?

Baby Padang Padang can be suitable in the right conditions. The famous Padang Padang barrel is a very different wave and should not be confused with the beginner option.

Can beginners surf Dreamland?

Dreamland may suit progressing surfers in certain conditions, but it is not automatically appropriate for a complete beginner.

Do I choose the beach before my lesson?

With our coaching, the session location is selected according to conditions and the surfers in the group.
