YOUR FIRST SURF LESSON IN BALI
Nervous? Excited? No idea what to expect?
Here’s exactly what your first surf session in Uluwatu can look like.
YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
You don’t need to know how to paddle, stand up or read a wave. You don’t need your own board. And you definitely don’t need to look like a surfer.
Your first lesson is about getting comfortable with the ocean, understanding the basics and experiencing the feeling of catching a wave for the first time.
1. WE CHOOSE THE RIGHT CONDITIONS
Before you get in the water, your coach considers the swell, tide, wind and your level. Around Uluwatu, conditions can change dramatically from one surf spot to another.
The goal isn’t to take you to the most famous wave. It’s to take you somewhere you can actually learn.
2. THE BASICS — BEFORE THE WAVES
Your coach introduces the board, basic ocean safety, paddling and the pop-up. You’ll understand what you’re trying to do before being asked to do it in moving water.
Nobody expects your first pop-up to be perfect. Falling off is part of learning — and usually part of the fun.
3. TIME TO CATCH YOUR FIRST WAVES
In the water, your coach helps with positioning, timing and choosing suitable waves. Early sessions are about repetition: paddle, catch a wave, try your pop-up, get feedback and go again.
That first ride — even for a few seconds — is usually the moment everything clicks.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER LESSON ONE?
Progress doesn’t stop once you stand up. Over several sessions you can begin working on better paddling, positioning, wave selection, timing, turning and understanding the lineup.
Video analysis and surf theory can help because what you feel on the board can look very different from the outside. Simple visual feedback gives you something specific to work on in the next session.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING?
Keep it simple: comfortable swimwear, high-SPF water-resistant sunscreen and sun protection. A rash guard is useful for longer sessions.
You don’t need to buy a surfboard before your trip. Suitable surf equipment is included where applicable in our packages, and using a board matched to your level makes learning much easier.
NERVOUS ABOUT YOUR FIRST LESSON?
That’s completely normal. The ocean is unfamiliar when you’re starting, and surfing looks much easier from the beach than it feels on your first attempt.
Tell your coach how comfortable you are in the water and ask questions. Good beginner coaching should make you feel supported, not rushed.
Your job is not to impress anyone. Your job is to learn.
FIRST SURF LESSON: QUICK FAQ
Can I take a surf lesson if I’ve never surfed?
Yes. Complete beginners are welcome and no previous surfing knowledge is expected.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Being comfortable in the water is important. Tell your coach if you are not confident so they understand your experience before the session.
Will I stand up in my first lesson?
Many beginners experience standing or riding a wave early on, but everyone progresses differently. The goal is learning safely rather than hitting a fixed milestone.
Should I take more than one lesson?
Several consecutive surf days give you more opportunity to repeat movements, receive feedback and build confidence.
