SURF CAMP VS SURF SCHOOL IN BALI
Both can teach you to surf. The experience around the lesson is what changes.
Here’s how to choose the right option for your first Bali surf trip.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
A surf school usually focuses on the lesson itself. You book a session, meet your instructor, surf and continue with the rest of your trip independently.
A surf camp combines surfing with your stay. Coaching becomes part of a multi-day experience that can also include accommodation, meals, activities and a community of other travellers.
Neither format is automatically better. The right choice depends on what you want from Bali.
A SURF SCHOOL MAY SUIT YOU IF…
You already have accommodation you love, surfing is only a small part of your holiday, or you want to try one lesson before deciding whether to continue.
It can be a simple, flexible option for travellers who prefer to organise their accommodation, food, transport and social life separately.
A SURF CAMP MAY SUIT YOU IF…
You want surfing to be one of the main reasons for your trip, you’d like several days of coaching, or you prefer having the logistics organised for you.
For a complete beginner, consecutive sessions can be particularly useful. Instead of starting from zero with a standalone lesson each time, you can build on what you worked on the previous day.
A surf camp turns learning to surf into the rhythm of your holiday rather than one activity on your itinerary.
IF YOUR PRIORITY IS PROGRESSION
Surfing is built through repetition. Paddling, positioning, timing and your pop-up become easier when you practise them over several sessions.
At our camp, coaching can also include surf theory and video analysis on scheduled days. Seeing yourself surf helps connect what you felt on the board with what actually happened on the wave.
A surf school can also provide excellent progressive coaching — particularly if you book multiple lessons with a consistent instructor — so ask how their lesson programme works before choosing.
IF YOU’RE TRAVELLING SOLO
This is where the difference can feel much bigger. With a surf school, your lesson may finish after a few hours and you return to your own accommodation.
At a small surf camp, you naturally keep seeing the same people — at breakfast, during surf sessions, at yoga and over dinner. For travellers arriving alone, that built-in community can be as valuable as the surfing itself.
Arrive solo. Surf together. Leave with people you actually know.
DON’T COMPARE THE PRICE OF A LESSON WITH THE PRICE OF A STAY
A standalone surf lesson will naturally cost less than a multi-day surf camp package. Compare what is actually included rather than the headline price.
Depending on the camp, a package may combine accommodation, multiple surf coaching days, equipment, meals, yoga and other coaching support. If you would pay for those separately anyway, compare the total trip cost.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Choose a surf school if you mainly want flexibility, already have your Bali trip organised, or simply want to test surfing with one or two lessons.
Consider a surf camp if you want surfing to structure your trip, value repeated coaching, prefer having accommodation and other logistics together, or want an easy social environment while travelling alone.
Whichever you choose, ask about group size, instructor experience, how spots are selected, what equipment is included and whether coaching is adapted to different levels.
SURF CAMP VS SURF SCHOOL: QUICK FAQ
Is a surf camp only for experienced surfers?
No. Many surf camps cater specifically to complete beginners and progressing surfers. Check the camp’s stated levels before booking.
Can I join a surf camp alone?
Yes. Surf camps can be particularly convenient for solo travellers because shared activities create natural opportunities to meet other guests.
Will I progress faster at a surf camp?
No format can guarantee a rate of progression. A multi-day camp does, however, make repeated coaching and consistent practice easier to build into your trip.
Do surf camps include everything?
Not always. Inclusions vary considerably, so check accommodation, number of surf sessions, equipment, meals, transfers and any extra activities before comparing prices.
