ULUWATU TRAVEL GUIDE

Surf, beaches, yoga, sunsets and slow days on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

Everything you need to start planning your Uluwatu trip.

WHY ULUWATU?

Uluwatu combines some of Bali’s most dramatic coastline with a world-famous surf culture, beach days, cafés, yoga and sunsets over the Indian Ocean.

It can be energetic when you want it to be and wonderfully slow when you don’t. That mix is exactly what makes the Bukit such a good base for a surf-and-wellness trip.

SURFING IN ULUWATU

Uluwatu is famous for powerful reef waves, but the wider Bukit Peninsula has surf options for different abilities when conditions allow.

If you’re a beginner, don’t choose a beach based only on reputation. Swell, tide and wind change the suitability of each spot, so local coaching and daily spot selection matter.

BEACHES WORTH EXPLORING

Nyang Nyang

A long stretch of coastline on the southern Bukit and a good option when you want a beach day away from some of the busiest strips.

Padang Padang

One of the area’s best-known beaches. The surf here varies by section and conditions, so don’t assume every wave you see is suitable for beginners.

Thomas Beach

A scenic beach below the cliffs that can also offer surf possibilities depending on conditions.

Balangan & Dreamland

Popular west-coast beaches with very different moods depending on swell and tide. Enjoy them as beaches first; choose your surf spot according to your level on the day.

YOGA + SLOWER DAYS

Uluwatu works especially well when you don’t want every day to be packed. Surf in the morning, practise yoga, find a café, spend the afternoon at the beach or simply recover for tomorrow’s session.

Yoga also pairs naturally with surfing by adding mobility, body awareness and a quieter rhythm to the trip.

SUNSETS & EVENINGS

The western side of the Bukit is known for sunset views from beaches and clifftop venues. You can make the evening as relaxed or as social as you like — sunset on the sand, dinner with friends or a night out.

If surfing is the priority, remember that tomorrow’s session often feels better after a good night’s sleep.

WHERE SHOULD YOU STAY?

Choose your base according to the trip you actually want. Some areas put you closer to restaurants and nightlife; others feel quieter. If you’re learning to surf, staying directly beside the most famous break is not necessarily an advantage.

A surf camp can be useful if you want your accommodation, coaching, equipment, meals and social life to fit together rather than organising each separately.

GETTING AROUND ULUWATU

The Bukit is spread out, so think about transport before you arrive. Scooters are convenient for experienced, appropriately licensed riders, but they aren’t essential.

If you don’t ride, plan drivers or other transport and check what your accommodation provides for surf sessions. Don’t learn to ride simply because it seems like everyone else is doing it.

HOW MANY DAYS IN ULUWATU?

You can see a few beaches in a short stay, but if your goal is to learn to surf, give yourself time. Surf progression benefits from repeated sessions, and conditions are different from one day to the next.

Our stays can range from 3 to 15 nights, so you can build Uluwatu into a wider Bali trip or make surfing the main event.
