WHERE TO STAY IN ULUWATU FOR SURFING

Your accommodation shouldn’t just match your budget — it should match the surf trip you want.
Here’s how to choose a base around Uluwatu.

FIRST: “ULUWATU” IS BIGGER THAN ONE SURF BREAK

Travellers often use “Uluwatu” to describe much of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. The famous Uluwatu reef is only one part of the area.

Where you stay affects your access to beaches, restaurants, nightlife and surf — but the closest wave is not automatically the right wave for your level.

IF YOU’RE A BEGINNER

Don’t book accommodation beside a famous surf break and assume you’ll learn there. Some of the Bukit’s iconic waves are designed for experienced surfers.

For a first surf trip, it can make more sense to choose a comfortable base and use local coaching to select the appropriate learning spot each day according to swell, tide and wind.

WHICH PART OF ULUWATU SUITS YOUR TRIP?

Near the Uluwatu / Suluban area

Useful if the iconic Uluwatu surf scene, cliff views and nearby restaurants are central to your trip. The famous reef itself is not a beginner wave, so new surfers should not choose this area simply to paddle out there.

Padang Padang / Bingin side

A popular part of the Bukit with beaches, cafés and several surf breaks within the wider area. Surf suitability varies significantly by break and conditions.

Balangan / Dreamland side

Another option for travellers who want beach access and surfing nearby. Both waves can change considerably with conditions and are not automatically suitable for a complete beginner every day.

Nyang Nyang / southern Uluwatu

A quieter base away from some of the busiest strips, suited to travellers who prefer a calmer home environment while exploring different beaches and surf spots around the Bukit.

THINK ABOUT TRANSPORT BEFORE YOU BOOK

The Bukit is spread out. If you don’t ride a scooter, check how your accommodation handles surf transport and how you’ll reach restaurants, beaches or other activities during free time.

If you are not already an experienced and appropriately licensed scooter rider, don’t make Bali traffic your training ground just because your accommodation is far from everything.

HOTEL, HOSTEL, VILLA OR SURF CAMP?

Choose a hotel or villa if privacy and organising your days independently matter most.

Choose a hostel if budget and a highly social environment are priorities.

Consider a surf camp if you want accommodation and surfing to work together — particularly if you’re learning, travelling solo or want repeated coaching rather than arranging individual lessons yourself.

FOR BEGINNERS

Choose your base for the overall experience. Let the day’s conditions decide where you surf.

WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT OUR ULUWATU BASE

Surf & Yoga Uluwatu is based around the Nyang Nyang area. Instead of tying every guest to one wave, our surf programme can choose among spots around the Bukit according to the day’s conditions and the group’s level.

Back at the retreat, the focus is simple: a welcoming place to eat, practise yoga, relax and spend time with the people you’ve been surfing with.

WHERE TO STAY IN ULUWATU: QUICK FAQ

Should beginners stay next to a beginner surf spot?

Not necessarily. Conditions change, so access to appropriate coaching and several possible surf locations can be more useful than staying beside one specific wave.

Do I need a scooter in Uluwatu?

No, but you should plan your transport before booking because the Bukit is spread out.

Is Uluwatu only for advanced surfers?

No. The famous Uluwatu reef is advanced, but the wider Bukit offers options for different levels when conditions allow.

Is a surf camp good for solo travellers?

It can be. Shared surf sessions, yoga and meals create built-in opportunities to meet other guests while still leaving you free time.
