BEST BEACHES IN ULUWATU, BALI

For surfing, swimming, sunsets and doing absolutely nothing.
A beginner-friendly guide to exploring the Bukit coastline.

THERE ISN’T ONE “BEST” ULUWATU BEACH

The beach you choose depends on what you want that day: surf, sand, sunset, a quieter afternoon or somewhere to watch experienced surfers.

And if you’re learning to surf, remember that a beginner-friendly reputation does not make a beach beginner-friendly in every condition. Swell, tide and wind matter.

NYANG NYANG BEACH

Best for: long beach walks, slower days and dramatic southern-Bukit scenery.

Nyang Nyang gives you a different feel from the busier west-coast beach strips. It’s a good choice when the goal is simply to spend time by the ocean rather than tick off another attraction.

THOMAS BEACH

Best for: a scenic beach day with surf possibilities when conditions line up.

Thomas sits below the cliffs and is worth visiting whether or not you surf. Beginners should still check the day’s conditions rather than assuming the water is suitable because the beach can sometimes offer more approachable surf.

PADANG PADANG

Best for: seeing one of the Bukit’s most famous beach areas.

Padang Padang is associated with serious surfing, but different sections and conditions create very different experiences. The famous reef wave is not where a complete beginner should simply paddle out. Follow local coaching and spot selection if you’re learning.

BALANGAN

Best for: west-coast scenery, surf watching and sunset.

Balangan has a strong surf identity and a beautiful stretch of coast. Depending on conditions it may feature in progression sessions, but it is not automatically suitable for a first-time surfer.

DREAMLAND

Best for: an easy beach stop and watching the ocean change through the day.

Dreamland can offer surf for different levels in certain conditions, but the wave can become much more demanding. Treat it as condition-dependent rather than a guaranteed beginner spot.

SULUBAN & THE ULUWATU SURF SCENE

Best for: experiencing the atmosphere around one of surfing’s iconic locations.

Come to watch, explore and take in the cliffs and surf culture. The Uluwatu reef is an advanced surf environment, so beginners can enjoy the scene without needing to surf the famous break itself.

BEGINNER TIP

The best beach for your surf lesson may change from one day to the next. Let conditions — not Instagram — choose the wave.

A NOTE ABOUT SWIMMING

Ocean conditions around the Bukit can include waves, currents, reef and changing tides. A beach that looks calm from the cliff is not automatically safe for swimming.

Check local conditions and warnings when you arrive, stay within your swimming ability and don’t use surfers in the water as proof that a spot is suitable for casual swimming.

ULUWATU BEACHES: QUICK FAQ

Which Uluwatu beach is best for beginner surfing?

There is no single beach that is best every day. Coaches should choose according to swell, tide, wind and your level.

Can I visit Uluwatu beaches without surfing?

Absolutely. Many are worth visiting for the scenery, beach time, surf watching or sunset alone.

Are all Uluwatu beaches good for swimming?

No. Conditions vary and can include strong surf, currents and reef. Check locally before entering the water.

Where should I stay to explore the beaches?

Choose a base for the overall trip you want rather than one beach alone. The Bukit is spread out, so plan transport as well.
